Setting up a VPN on your iPhone takes about two minutes. There are two ways to do it: the easy way with a VPN app (recommended for almost everyone), and the manual way through iOS Settings if you have connection details from a provider or your workplace. We’ll cover both.
Method 1: Using a VPN app (recommended)
A dedicated app handles all the configuration for you and lets you switch servers with one tap.
Install the app. Open the App Store, search for your VPN (for example, ClaudVPN), and tap Get.
Open it and sign in. Create an account or continue anonymously if the app allows it.
Allow the VPN configuration. The first time you connect, iOS shows a prompt: “[App] would like to add VPN configurations.” Tap Allow and confirm with Face ID, Touch ID, or your passcode. This is normal and required — it lets the app manage the VPN tunnel.
Choose a server and connect. Pick a location (or use the default fastest server) and tap Connect.
Confirm it’s on. You’ll see a small VPN badge in the status bar at the top of the screen.
Tip: Once the configuration is approved, you can also toggle the VPN from Settings → VPN — but using the app is easier and lets you change servers.
Method 2: Manual setup in iOS Settings
Use this only if you were given server details (address, account, password, and protocol) by a provider or IT department.
Open Settings → General → VPN & Device Management → VPN.
Tap Add VPN Configuration…
Choose the Type (IKEv2, IPSec, or L2TP — whichever your provider specifies).
Fill in the Description, Server, Remote ID, and account credentials exactly as provided.
Tap Done, then flip the Status switch to on to connect.
How to turn the VPN on and off
Once a configuration exists, you can toggle it anytime under Settings → VPN, or from within your VPN app. Many people leave it on all the time for continuous protection; there’s no harm in doing so.
VPN not connecting on iPhone? Quick fixes
Toggle it off and on. The simplest fix — disconnect and reconnect.
Switch servers. A single server can be busy or unreachable; pick another location.
Check your internet first. Make sure Wi-Fi or cellular works without the VPN.
Update the app and iOS. Outdated versions cause connection issues.
Remove and re-add the configuration. Delete the VPN profile in Settings, then reconnect through the app to recreate it.
Restart your iPhone. Clears temporary network glitches.
Setting up ClaudVPN: download it from the App Store, open the app, tap Allow when iOS asks to add the VPN configuration, then tap Connect. That’s it — you’re protected. New to VPNs? Start with What Is a VPN and How Does It Work?
